It has been shown that the parenting styles –PS– of parents affect the academic performance of their children; however, it is uncertain whether their mental health and other sociodemographic variables also affect their children’s academic performance. The present study aimed to analyze the association between PS and academic performance, as well as symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and some sociodemographic variables in a group of parents of elementary school children. Fifty-five parents between 24 and 52 years of age participated, and responded to a psychological battery that evaluated PS and symptoms of mood disorders. The results revealed that the students’ academic performance showed an association with negative emotional style, as well as with the parent’s schooling. Likewise, depressive and stress symptomatology correlated with negative cognition style. The findings of this research suggest that parental mental health seems to have an association with the academic performance of the child; however, further research will allow us to know its effects and its relationship with other psychosocial variables.
