Abstract

The study starts from the conception that academic performance in students is determined by multiple factors, among which can be considered the personal, family and social; understanding that any adverse situation that the student experiences during their training will have an impact, to a greater or lesser extent, on their academic performance. The objective was to identify the type of adversities faced by the students of the   Dentist Surgeon Career of the FES Zaragoza, UNAM, and if these impact their academic performance. Also, it identified the elements that help them minimize the impact of adversities; all from the theoretical framework of Resilience. This is an observational study, which through an instrument called "Resilience 2017-2018" applied online to a sample of 200 students of the 4 years of the career, identified the main adversities that students face, and the resilient factors they possess. The main adversities that had more impact on their academic performance were family and personal. The resilient factors that most students possess were the possession of social networks and models to imitate, as well as autonomy, which helped them greatly to overcome their adversities. As preliminary conclusions, it can be mentioned that students who possess more resilient factors and to a higher level, are the ones that better overcome adversities, preventing this from having a negative impact on their academic performance.
